SHOULD YOU DISCLOSE YOUR AUTISM TO YOUR EMPLOYERS?

I've been asked this question on the Autism Assumptions video (credit: Smosh/Smoshalike/Pressalike) and within my peers, and I've wanted to expand on my short answer more, since I stand strongly on people on the ASD spectrum to speak out on their disability.

While it's illegal to be discriminated based on superfluous characteristics such as disabilities, unfortunately, there are cases of discrimination running rampant in any industry; however, my experience will be more towards working within the creator industry.

Autism to the work force is a double edged sword that will yield either a bad outcome or an even worse one. Either one doesn't disclose their autism and are subjected to neurotypical communication mechanisms, putting them at an equitable disadvantage; or one can do so and are subjected to possible discriminations that can hinder your chances at landing a job, especially when voluntary self identification forms group all disabilities under one multiple choice answer.

When I disclose that I wear my autism like a badge of honor, I'm letting it be known that there's no point in hiding my condition. While autism is an invisible disorder, it's also a disorder that is noticeable, in my experience.

For me, personally, I may not disclose I have autism, but it's very clear that I have something. It's been better to narrow down the jobs that don't accommodate to aim for the ones that do.

I believe me being vocal on my autism brings awareness anywhere I go for my specific flavor of autism.

So should you disclose you're autistic? Absolutely, and while you do, be aware of your limitations and accommodations! it doesn't make you less able! Some people can drive and some people can't. It may take some time for the people who can't to get around, but give them a bus or ride sharing and they'll make it just fine!
It's the same with autism.
Some people can finish a task fine and others may need a bus to get there, but we will get there!
